Abstract

New reading and interpretation for two Ambracian stelae

The article deals with two published inscribed stelae of Hellenistic times from Ambracia, the Corinthian colony founded in the late 7th century BC in the region of southern Epirus, located in the same area as the modern city of Arta. These inscriptions have been studied in the past in terms of their type. The former has previously been characterized as votive, which was subsequently used as a funerary, while the latter inscription has been characterized as a funerary.
The inscriptions themselves provide evidence (structure of the text, use of formal expressions, identification of fragmentary surviving names with anthroponyms or theonyms, etc.), which, in combination with the study of similar inscriptions from Ambracia, allow for a re-examination of the type of these inscriptions. Additionally, these inscriptions certainly complete our knowledge of the Ambracian citizens, individuals and public officers, during the Hellenistic period.
