Author Guidelines

Submissions and Style Guidelines

Instructions for Authors

  • Submission of an article implies its publication is approved by all authors.
  • Authors should submit the manuscript as a Word document, following the guidelines outlined below. JCEPS follows the Harvard style (a full guide can be found here).
  • Manuscripts must be submitted online here. Registration and login are required to submit items and to check the status of current submissions.

General

  • The text should be clear, concise and use grammatical English (UK or US English spelling). Arguments should be substantiated with well-reasoned supportive evidence. Citations to relevant published work are essential.
  • The editors assume that an author who submits a manuscript to JCEPS: (a) assures that the manuscript is not under consideration by another journal; (b) has not published a substantial part of the manuscript or the findings elsewhere; (c) is responsible for the accuracy of all statements and findings; (d) agrees that the editor has the right to edit the manuscript as necessary for publication, if accepted (such that content is not changed); and (e) will obtain permission to quote and reproduce material owned by someone else.
  • Current word limits are normally 6.000-12.000 words for full-length articles and 1000-3000 words for book reviews.
  • All articles must be in Times New Roman font, 14 point and 1.5 line-spacing (Times New Roman, 10 point and single-spaced for endnotes), normal margin, portrait orientation, A4 size, left aligned. Headings must be in bold, Times New Roman 14 (not underlined), and Subheadings in Times New Roman font 14, underlined.
  • For quotes, please check the guidelines below.

Manuscript Preparation

The manuscript must include:

1. Cover page

  • Title.
  • List of authors and their affiliations and a brief (no more than a 100 words) description of their research interests and recent publications.
  • Number of words in the manuscript.
  • Name of the corresponding author: please give complete postal and email addresses, and telephone number.

2. Abstract and keywords

Articles must include an abstract that should not be more than 200-250 words. The abstract should summarise succinctly the important points made in the manuscript. It should stand alone and not contain notes. It should be followed by no more than 5 italicised, meaningful, non-repetitive keywords, taken from the text (words already used in the title should be avoided).

For example:

Keywords: activism, critical education, transformation, emancipation, class

3. Quotes and References

JCEPS uses an in-text reference author/date/page system (with fuller references in bibliographies). A list of references should be placed at the end of the manuscript containing all sources cited in alphabetical and chronological order.

The Harvard Style dictates that quotes longer than 40 words are laid out in a separate paragraph of text and indented, font 12. No inverted commas/quotation marks are included. Format: Left indent 1.27, Line Spacing 1.5, Times New Roman 12

4. Notes

Use endnotes sparingly. Number with Arabic numerals (not I, II, III…) starting with 1, 2, 3 and continuing through the manuscript. Endnotes should be in font size 10. No footnotes should be used.

5. Reference List

Place the reference list immediately following the manuscript text (on a separate page). The author is responsible for the accuracy of the references. References must use THE HARVARD SYSTEM (not SPA or Chicago). Only include texts cited within the article.

6. Author Details

Author details, including indication of corresponding author, should be included after reference list.

Research Articles

JCEPS publishes original research (theoretical and empirical), normally between 6000-12000 words. Submissions must conform to journal guidelines, including publication style and referencing, to be considered for review. Articles that have not followed journal guidelines will be returned to authors.

Book Reviews

JCEPS publishes book reviews of relevant new monographs. While we accept requests for reviews, we may not be able to accommodate all requests.
